Black and White Photos

I love black and white photos. They just leave so much room for the imagination and they evoke so many emotions. Many cameras have a setting for black and white photos. However, for those that do not, any editing program can turn your color photos into black and white.

This is my brother. I love the tones of gray on the wall in the background. I also like how the camera draws out his emotions, leaving a subtle shadow on the side of his face.

Here is another picture that I like...

Yes, they are just tomatoes, but they look so plump and juicy and they do not even have color! Just imagine how red they are...

I am no professional and this was the first time that I used the black and white setting on my camera but I had fun with it.

Here are some tips that a colleague gave me for taking black and white photographs:
  • Texture: Lack of color emphasizes texture in a subject (like the surface of a straw hat).
  • Background: Make sure that the background does not distract from the subject. Try to blur it out or move to another angle.
  • Light and Shadow: Take pictures of the same scene or subject as different times of the day to change the mood.
  • Colors: Two very opposite colors blend into identical gray tones in a black and white photograph.
  • Shapes: Black and white photos focus on line and shapes to provide interest. Centralize on subjects with curves, slanting lines, or crooked lines.

Jill,

I love taking black and white pictures of my two sons. In black and white pictures their facial features and the emotions on their faces are sharper compared to color photographs. Last winter my husband took some black and white pictures of the snow in North Carolina. The pictures turned out very nice, I loved the contrast.

These images are wonderful. I just love black and white photography. In high school I took a photography class. We had a dark room and I developed my own prints. It was a great class and I learned a lot. I'm happy to see someone who appreciates and enjoys photography. It's a wonderful artform and hobby!

I also have to agree, I love black and white pictures as well! I also took some photography classes in high school, and I really wish that I continued to keep up with it. Your pictures look so professional and I am pretty impressed!

Black and white picture are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing yours. They are great. It is amazing how more scrumptious those tomatoes look in black and white.

My husband and I have yellow/gold walls in our room. All the pictures of us hanging up are black and white. It is a great contrast.

I love working with black and white film as well. I think one of the great advantages of digital photography is how you can switch from black & white to color instantly. It makes a great difference when you can fool around with color options on a single picture instead of having to take a whole roll in either color or b&w.
